Avamar 6.1 VM Image backup fails: avvcbimage Error: Failed to connect to virtual disk; You do not have access rights to this file

March 8, 2013

I have recently run into this error on several Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 VM Image backup jobs with Avamar 6.1

This is caused by This issue occurs when the Microsoft VSS service attempts to do an application quiesced snapshot, but is unable to read the disk UUID or Serial Number value for one or more virtual machine disks.

For more information see:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2035736

To work around this issue configure disk.EnableUUID to false.

To configure disk.EnableUUID using the vSphere Web Client:
  1. Right-click the virtual machine and click Shut Down Guest OS.
  2. Right-dick the virtual machine and select Edit Settings.
  3. Click VM Options.
  4. Expand the Advanced section and click Edit Configuration.
  5. Locate the disk.EnableUUId parameter and set the value to false.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Right-click the virtual machine and click Power On.
