How to Quickly Retrieve Avamar Serial Numbers via SSH

January 31, 2013

Gen4 Single Node Avamar

SSH into the Avamar Single Node and run the following command:

/usr/bin/ipmitool fru print 0 | grep “Product Asset Tag” | sed “s/^.*: *\(.*\)/\1/”

Avamar Datastore GEN4S/GEN4 Multi-Node Avamar

The following mapall command run from the utility node (run as admin with dpnid key loaded) will retrieve the serial numbers from all of the nodes in the grid.

SSH into the Utility Node as admin and type:

ssh-agent bash

ssh-add ~/.ssh/dpnid

mapall –noerror –user=root –nodes=all+ –quiet ‘echo `hostname -i`”: “`/usr/bin/ipmitool fru print 0 | grep “Product Asset Tag” | sed “s/^.*:\s\(.*$\)/\1/”`’

Avamar Datastore Generation 2 and Generation 3 nodes

Mapall command to be run on the utility node (as admin user with dpnid keys loaded) which will retrieve the serials on all the nodes in the grid.

SSH into Utility Node as Admin, then type:

ssh-agent bash

ssh-add ~/.ssh/dpnid

mapall –all+ –quiet ‘/usr/bin/omreport chassis frontpanel | grep “LCD Line 1” | sed “s/^.*: *\(.*\)/\1/”‘

Single Node Avamar Generation 2 & Generation 3

SSH into the Single Node Avamar

/usr/bin/omreport chassis frontpanel | grep “LCD Line”

LCD Line 1 : WCAAV094724045_100-580-602_A07_IP_3.75.224.107

The EMC serial number is at the beginning of the LCD Line value starting with WCA or NNG up to the first underscore.

The middle section (100-580-602_A07) is the EMC part number.

The last section is the node’s IP address.

  1. Note that the serial numbers for older hardware (Gen1, older Gen2) might not be configured on the front panel. All Gen3 hardware should report the node serial number, though.

    • Thanks Ian, yeah I left off Gen1 all together because I believe I had to write those down from the back of the physical nodes as I racked them, EMC has improved a lot since the old days…
      Thanks for posting…
